MECDA Fall Festival of Music & Dance - Nov. 1 Phoenix

Hello Dancers,

The MECDA chapter is now taking reservations for performance spots on the festival stage. We will have ongoing entertainment from 10:30am to 5:00pm - that's a lot of dancing - come be part of it!

Soloists 5 minutes
Duet/Trio 10 minutes
Troupes 4+ 15 minutes

There will also be 7 drop-in workshops presented by instructors from throughout the state - including your very own moderator - Carrie!

We also need people to volunteer to help with admissions, stage managing and workshop helpers - this can be just a 1 or 2 hour stint during your day and will be greatly appreciated. It takes a LOT more than the 4 members of the MECDA chapter board to run an event like this!

Syren is regrouping to form Nawari & Anaya Tribal

Hey Freinds and Fans,

Syren Dance Company is regrouping to form Nawari Dance Ensemble (Sedona) http://gaiadance.net & Anaya Tribal (Phoenix Sister Troupe) http://anayatribal.com . We have decided collectively as a group that due to the distance between our sedona member and phoenix members and the communting required that it is most advantagous to us all to form two sister troupes from our one original troupe and continue to collaborate on dance projects when possible. You can see us all performing together this year at the Arizona Reniassance Festival for the entire season. Look for us at the Teatro De La Rosa Stage.

Come see live music that is sizzling, energizing, passionate and unforgettable! Souhail Kaspar Near East Ensemble will be in Phoenix on October 6th and 7th with a series of percussion, music, and dance workshops and a spectacular show with a stellar lineup. Guest artists include the multi-talented musicians Naser Musa and Georges Lammam, and the legendary dancer/insructor Dahlena. The band includes the mesmerizing vocal and instrumental stylings of Naser Musa and Georges Lammam, Miles Jay on string bass, and a rocking percussion section including master percussionist Souhail Kaspar, Majdi Kurd, Elissa, and Joe Borik. Special dance performances by Dahlena, Ava Fleming, Carrie Konyha, Melissa, Neena Nour, Amanda Rose, and Ziva! Souhail is proud to present Ziva from Arcata, California. Ziva currently performs with the award-winning Ya Habibi Dance Company and presents beautiful, high-energy, classical Egyptian dance. We are delighted to welcome her to the valley!

Here's your chance to learn the unique techniques & movement repertoire behind Syren Dance Company and their world fusion bellydance format. This class is suited for the beginner dancer and includes beginning level slow moves, fast moves, spins, turns, steps, beginning combinations & queues with a focus on the group dynamic. It will be this Wednesday from 6:10 to 7:10. After that beginning poi will be Wednesdays, 6:10 to 7:10, and advanced poi Wednesdays 7:20 to 8:20. Another Poi workshop!

If interested, Noel from S.F. CA is teaching 2 advanced poi workshops followed by 1 contact staff workshop on January 13th. Poi classes will be 3:00-4:30 and 5:00-6:30. Noel Yee’s Bio
Noel Yee has been involved in object manipulation for the past three years, focusing on poi and staff throughout, contact staff for a year, and most recently contact juggling. He values his experience training and collaborating with many individuals and groups including MCP from Scotland, Dave from Colorado, Isa Issacs and Temple of Poi, Zan from Instruments of the Now (which recently released the “Encyclopoidia”), Coven Fire Collective, LSD Fuego, InterKonnected, the fire arts festival with the IK dragon, and the Fire Conclave at Burning Man for the past two years.

Noel has taught contact staff classes in the Bay Area, South Bay, and is organizing classes in NY and the East Coast during this winter. He volunteered and taught a 30 person contact staff class at FireFrums in the Fall of 2006. In the Summer of 2006, Noel worked at Camp Winnarainbow teaching children circus skills and performance techniques. As a high school teacher Noel has a talent for explicit instruction. Keep your eye out for his contact staff instructional DVD to be realesed in Late Spring of 2007!

Open Dance in Phoenix

We're having another Open Dance Night on July 27th at Layali Restaurant in Phoenix (Ahwatukee area). The dance floor is open to any and all that want to dance - the stage is open to anyone that wants to play. This is a great opportunity to meet other dancers, musicians and dance enthusiasts - come out and make new friends! We get a nicely mixed crowd of cabaret, tribal and SCA dancers and musicians.

We'll be clearing the floor for just a few performances - student groups and non-professionals of all styles are welcome. There will only be 6 performance spots (group or solo) and some have already been snapped up! If you are interested in performing that evening contact me ASAP - they're going fast!

Musicians and dancers that contact me in advance to perform will have a reduced admission and discount on any other menu items they order. Just a little thank you for sharing your talents :-)

Musicians Wanted !!!

We need musicains that play arabic/middle eastern/mediterrainian/gypsy instuments For our music and dance ansemble. !! We have enough drummers. We are looking for are violinists, oud & bazouki players, rababa, Nay, mijwiz/ arabic wind instrument players.

We are based out of Sedona AZ so being able to commit to weekly rehearsals in Sedona is a must. Also, must be able to travel (mostly in-state, some out of state) for performance shows.

SYREN DEBUT PERFORMANCE

Our first full half hour Tribal Fusion show together as SYREN debuted at the AZ Ren Fair this past week. It was awesome. We had a great time, had great weather and got lots of complelemts from the fair promoter and the entertainment director. There is talk about having us back again before this years fair is over with. We will definatley be back next year too. GREAT JOB SYRENS!!! Im starting to post pix from the fair too. Check out the photos for updates all week. Cant wiat to see the DVD recording of the show....

Support Visiting Talent!

Souhail Kaspar will be here for Doumbek & Riqq workshops on Saturday, March 11th, a dancer's rhythm & movement workshop on Sunday, March 12th and a fabulous show on Sunday evening at Olive Branch.
He has put together a wonderful ensemble of musicians: Naser Musa on Oud, Majdi Kurd on additional percussion (all from California) and our own Ramzy on keyboards. If that wasn't enough - there's dancers too!
Please come out and support these events. The valley's bellydance scene can only grow if we continue to learn and be a welcoming spot for touring artists and instructors Without a supportive dancer/musician community we will find Phoenix is passed over by the best and brightest of the Middle Eastern entertainers and instructors. I hope to see many of you there.

What would you like to see more of in workshops????

Hey Syren Freinds.

What would you like to see more of in workshop presentations? I'm personally bored with learning only choreographed routines. I totally understand that choreography is a useful tool for learning to transition and interpret music but how many of us have actually ever used someone elses solo choreography in full?? I never have. Usually I come away from a workshop with snipets of movement variations or combinations that I can adapt and make my own.

I would like to see more workshops offered that present usefull information and concepts about performing and being a performer/teacher allong with solid dance technique. This is the approach I take in the workshops I teach but want to learn more about what students WANT to learn in workshops.
